Sustaining Business Benefit following Major Change

Ten years ago, Castrol Europe had national-based purchasing in each European country, which had led to uncoordinated contract negotiation and a fragmented supply chain. To improve business performance, they developed a Europe-wide purchasing management organisation, incorporating new ways of working, organisational structure and a common technology platform. This enabled them to manage contracts on a pan-European basis in a professional and structured manner, resulting in initial savings of £16.8 million. Ten years on, and now part of the BP organisation, the global supply chain still employs the same approach and continues to enjoy better business performance from it.
